Men's Health Can using soy effect thyroid health? Answer Can using soy effect thyroid health? There are many articles that have been published in the popular media, not scientific literature, that caution about the potential negative effects of soy on thyroid health. Unfortunately, no research has directly evaluated isoflavones and thyroid hormone levels. Therefore, one can only speculate based on the available information until clinical studies have been done in this area. Dr. Anderson does not think that soy affects thyroid health or thyroid medication absorption. However, some people do need to take their medication without food. We would encourage you at this time, until more research has been done, to continue including soy foods in your diet. Many women find soy foods to be an excellent alternative to HRT. Soy can help to alleviate some of the symptoms associated with menopause, such as hot flashes, insomnia and mood swings. In addition, soy can prevent heart disease and may prevent cancer and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Due to your thyroid condition, we would not recommend that you include more than 25 grams of soy protein or 50 milligrams of isoflavones in your daily intake. In particular, we would discourage you from taking an isoflavone tablet supplement (it does not sound from your email that this is the case). |
